Sublime (band)

Sublime (English for raised) was a band from Long Beach, California who played a mix of punk, ska, dub and reggae. They broke up after the death of singer Bradley Nowell in May 1996.

History

Sublime was founded in 1988 by Bradley Nowell, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson. After the demo recorded in 1991 Jah Will not Pay the Bills 40 Oz to Freedom, the first official LP of the band, which was released in 1992 on the label Skunk Records and on own concerts sold about 30,000 times. Sublime Thus, held some time in the U.S. alternative charts and were able to make a major-label attention. The next album, Robbin the Hood, was released in 1994 then even with MCA Records.

On May 25, 1996 died singer and composer Bradley James Nowell from an overdose of heroin - four months before the third and final album Sublime was released. Since Nowell was the driving force of Sublime, his death meant the end of the band. The two remaining band members, Eric Wilson and Floyd Gaugh, formed the Long Beach Dub Allstars, which dissolved in 2002 due to infighting within the band again. Later, Wilson played in the band LB Shortbus and Gaugh in the band Dubcat. Gaugh yet also played in the band Eyes Adrift with Curt Kirkwood, singer and guitarist of the Meat Puppets, and Krist Novoselic, the bassist of Nirvana.

That Sublime were not only popular with the fans, but also for playing music colleagues, showed a benefit concert for Nowells son Jacob James: various bands including No Doubt and Pennywise, played for the school fees for Jacob.

In 2010, announced the founding members of Sublime, Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson, that they will officially go back on stage after 14 years of absence, along with new frontman, singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez.
