Subra Suresh

Subra Suresh (born 30 May 1956 Mumbai ) is an American engineer scientist.

Suresh studied at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras with a Bachelor 's degree in 1977 and from Iowa State University with a master's degree in 1979. He was in 1981 a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1983 he was Assistant Professor, Associate Professor in 1986 and Professor in 1989 at Brown University. In 1993 he was Richard P. Simmons Professor at MIT and later Vannevar Bush Professor. 2000 to 2006 he was faced with the Department of Materials Science and 2007 to 2010 he was CEO of engineering faculty at MIT.

In 2010 he was president of the National Science Foundation. From 2013 he is president of Carnegie Mellon University.

He is concerned with metallurgy, in particular fatigue, thin films, nano- biomechanics (eg cancer cells).

In 2012 he received the Timoshenko Medal, 2007, the European Materials Medal, 2008 AC Eringen Medal and 1985 Presidential Young Investigator Award. In 1985 he received the Gold Medal of the Matthewson Mineral, Metals and Materials Society. In 2011 he was awarded the Padma Shri. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is also a member of the Indian Academy of Sciences ( Bangalore ), Indian Academy of Engineering, the Third World Academy of Sciences, the Spanish Academy of Science and Engineering Academy, the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering and the Leopoldina. He is seven honorary doctorates.
