Subsolar point

The sub-solar point ( subsolar equal under the sun, in Latin ) is the one place on earth where the sun is at its zenith. It is the point where the line connecting the centers of the sun and the earth crosses the earth's surface.

On a sundial with additional world map on the dial ( see picture, left) is of the day and season, indicating the current sub-solar point even point. It may be located between the two turning circles around the earth. The geographic coordinates of longitude and latitude of the subsolar point correspond to the equatorial coordinate hour angle and declination of the sun. The latter are measured as time of day and approximately the date of a sundial.

For global representations of central solar eclipses ( see figure, right) is also drawn to the sub-solar point. The place for the maximum totality / annularity is closer at this point, the central core of the Earth is hit by the shadow of the moon (minimum gamma value ).
