Suburban Station

The Suburban Station ( German: suburban station ) is an underground passenger station for regional transport in the city center of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was opened on 28 September 1930 and replaced the old Broad Street Station in the neighborhood. Access is via the foyer of an office building, which was accompanied built with the station. The station is also connected to a spacious concourse with the subway.

The station was the Pennsylvania Center of the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR ) built in the years 1929-30, together with the overlying office buildings, as part of the Philadelphia Improvements as achtgleisiger railhead for local transport. Since the 1950s, there were plans to extend the tunnel on the Suburban station out west. Thus, the trains should mount up to the lines of the competing railway company Reading, which also had a head station for their commuter trains on the other end of downtown.

This project was implemented in the form of the Center City Commuter Connection due to financial and technical difficulties until the early 1980s. Since then, the Suburban station is a through station with four running lines in east-west direction.

The station was in 2007 with 23,342 newcomers per day is by far the busiest passenger station in downtown Philadelphia.
