Suchowola

Suchowola is a town of about 2,200 inhabitants in north-eastern Poland. The city lies on the eastern edge of the Biebrzasümpfe and belongs to the powiat Sokolski in the Podlaskie Voivodeship. Suchowola is regarded as one of the geographical centers of Europe.

History

The first written mention of the village dates back to 1576th In the 17th century a strong Jewish community was born. 1698 Suchowola received by August the Strong the right to holding a Jewish year market and got 1770 awarded by Stanislaus Augustus II the city rights.

1775 established the Polish cartographer and astronomer Szymon Antoni Sobiekrajski Suchowola as the geographical center of Europe.

Between 1795 and 1807 the town belonged to Prussia, then to Russia until 1918 and then to Poland.

In 1939, the city was occupied by the German Reich. In July 1941, organized pogroms against Polish citizens in Suchwola their Jewish fellow citizens.
