The machine is based on the provided with a hot blade tip drive Sud -Ouest SO 1100 Ariel. After the intermediate step of the two -seater SO 1220, who possessed a cold blade tip drive (F- and F- WGVO WGZX ), and finally the SO 1221 was developed. Consisting of a tubular steel frame and designed for two people in a cabin machine was launched on December 16, 1953 for its maiden flight. The chassis consisted of two runners, where beiklappbare wheels were attached in order to move the helicopter on the ground can. It first five prototypes were manufactured.

The machine showed up in their weight class to be extremely powerful and won several world records as the world altitude record of 4789 meters on December 29, 1953. The U.S. Army was interested in the helicopter ( ID YHO -1) and received three machines from the pre-series. The Bundeswehr was to test six units.

The U.S. armed forces gave their machines back in 1958, after the tests were successful.

The German Army carried out extensive comparisons with the Bell 47 and the Saunders -Roe Skeeter AOP 12. The SO 1221 was first used by the German Army, teaching and supply group Niedermendig before it was submitted for field testing to Fritzlar to the Army Season 2. There have been repeated problems, and two machines crashed. Also you were not satisfied with the tactical features such as range and payload, so you returned the remaining four units to the manufacturer.

In the civilian sector, the SO was in 1221 mainly used in agriculture for spraying fields as so-called Agricopter. In this role, a spray and a 200 -gallon tank was installed for the chemicals. 1968 were about 40 machines in use in this role.
