Sues ( English / French transcription: Suez, Arab السويس, standard Arabic as- Suwais, egyptian said it - SWLS ) is a town in Egypt, on the northern tip of the Red Sea, which runs here in the Gulf of Suez, at the mouth of the Suez Canal.

Sue's is located 135km from the Egyptian capital Cairo to the east. The city has 529 055 inhabitants ( 2008). Probably Sue stands on the site of the old enema, called by the Arabs Qulzum. It was known before the discovery of the sea route to India around the Cape of Good Hope as a major hub of European and Indian goods, but then fell and counted at the beginning of the canals only 1,500 inhabitants. After completion of the Suez Canal, the city flourished again. Its importance as a transit port for the East Asia trade and passenger traffic ( in particular to Mecca ) helped the economy to a huge boom. During the Six -Day War with Israel in 1967, the town was temporarily evacuated completely and strongly affected. The damages can be seen even today sometimes.

The main sources of income are today's petroleum refineries, petrochemical and iron processing industry. Also, some fertilizer factories have settled here. Sue is the seat of some of the Suez Canal University.

The city consists of the Arab quarter and the regular scale European quarter with a viceregal mansion. Southeast of the old town new modern districts have emerged, built on a former sea floor.

To the northeast lies the estuary of 2 m above sea level here. M. lying freshwater channel ( Ismailia Canal) with a big lock work. At the docks, which are far beyond built into the sea, leading a 3 km long causeway; on this the railway runs to the harbor basin, Port Ibrahim called, with lighthouse and the statue of Lieutenant Waghorn.

During the revolution in Egypt 2011, the city was dominated by Sues particularly serious clashes between protesters and security forces.
