The Sugamo Station (Japanese巣 鸭 駅, Sugamo -eki ) is one of the northernmost stations of the annular Yamanote Line. It is located in Toshima in Tokyo Prefecture, Japan. The station is also served by the Toei Mita Line with, in the network, which bears the name of I- 15th

History

On April 1, 1903, the Sugamo train station is opened as a goods station. Just over six years later makes on 12 October 1909, the Yamanote Line for the first time held at the station. On December 27, 1968, the station Mita Line is opened. After exactly 76 years, the goods will be stopped at the station on 31 March 1979.

Since 1 June 2007, the station is fully renovated this includes the construction of a 5-storey station building. Construction is expected to be completed by 31 October 2009.

Design and tracks

The both of JR East and the Toei station are built in the commonly encountered design as a transit stations. Both come with a single central platform which is approached by the respective line. The tracks of the Yamanote Line run above ground in the southwest - northeast direction, directly south of the Yamanote tracks, the tracks of the Shonan - Shinjuku line running past the station.

The station is served by the Yamanote Line JR East and the Toei Mita Line. The colors used in the table below correspond to the award of the respective company color codes of the lines.

Environment

In the north of the station is the long shopping street Jizō - dori (地蔵 通り), which is popular among older people. In the vernacular, this area is also Grandma's Harajuku (お ばあちゃん の 原宿, Oba - chan no Harajuku ) called.

At the southern end Jizō - dori is a Buddhist temple and cemetery, the Jizō is dedicated. In a ritual washing of the local statues, worshipers pray for health and liberation from suffering.

Use

In 2007, the Yamanote Line was used at the station from an average of 78 487 passengers a day, so that the rank 53 took over 900 on the ranking of the busiest train stations of JR East in 2007. The Mita line was used by an average of 44,676 zusteigenden 45 122 and disembarking passengers a day in 2007.
