Sugar Ray Seales

"Sugar" Ray Seales ( born April 9, 1952 in Saint Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands ) is a retired American boxer.

Amateur

The tall southpaw Seales was an outstanding amateur and won the 1971 U.S. Championship in the welterweight and 1972 National Golden Gloves before he was the only American won a gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. His record was 338-12.

Professional

In 1973, he started his professional career. He won his first 21 fights before Marvin Hagler defeated in August 1974 in his hometown of Boston on points. In a second duel, the two separated three months later in a draw, the third encounter in 1979 with Hagler won a first-round knockout, Seales in front of it had also lost against Ayub Kalule. In other matches of the 70 he lost the hard puncher Eugene "Cyclone" Hart by points and the Englishman Alan Minter by knockout

He was named after the knockout loss to Hagler never more world-class and punched in his career to no world championship title. To the End of career he got big eyes problems he not sought treatment and therefore became blind later almost completely.
