Sughd Province

Sughd ( Tajik Вилояти Суғд, Wilojati Sughd; Russian Согдийская область, Sogdijskaja Oblast ) is one of the four provinces ( Wilojat ) Tajikistan. Sughd is the latest name of the province. In early Soviet times it was called Leninabad (until 1991 ), then Leninobod (until 2000), then Sogd (until 2004). The name refers to the historical name of the region in which the province covers, Sogdiana.

Geography

It is in the northwest of the country and covers approximately 26,100 km ². The population is 2.0278 million inhabitants ( 2004), up from 1,870,000 inhabitants ( 2000) and 1.558 million (1989).

Sughd, sharing borders with the provinces of Uzbekistan Jizzax, Namangan, Samarkand, Sirdaryo, Surxondaryo, Qashqadaryo, Toshkent and Fergana and the Kyrgyz Batken province. In the south, bordering the Sughd Nohijahoi tobei Dschumhurij area. Sughd is drained by the Syr Darya.

Management

Administratively located Sughd divided into 14 districts.

Provincial capital is Khujand, the former Leninabad.
