Suhayb ar-Rumi

Suhaib ar - Rumi Arab صهيب الرومي, DMG Suhaib ar - Rumi, also known as Suhaib ibn Sinan (* 587 ) was a former slave in the Byzantine Empire, which later became one of Muhammad's companions and a member of the new Muslim community.

Life

Around the year 591, about twenty years before the start of the mission of Muhammad ruled an Arab named Sinan ibn Malik, the city of Al - Uballah on behalf of the Persian Empire. The city, which is a part of Basra today, was on the banks of the Euphrates. He had several children, one of them was Suhaib. As Suhaibs mother took the child to a picnic in a village called ath - Thani, this village was just attacked by Byzantine soldiers who took many prisoners, including on Suhaib. He then remained 20 years in Greek-speaking Byzantine Empire as a slave at various lords and soon forgot his Arabic language which he could only speak broken. At the first available opportunity Suhaib fled to Mecca to seek refuge there. Because of his lack of language skills and his blond hair he got there the nickname " al- Rumi " ( the Romans ). Soon he was representative of a rich aristocrats and traders named Abdullah ibn Yudan. Later, after his acceptance of Islam, he was prevented from fleeing to Medina and was able to escape only there after he left his entire fortune to the Quraish
