Suhre

The Suhre (also Sura ) is a 34 km long tributary of the river Aare in the Swiss cantons of Lucerne and Aargau. The river has its source in Lake Sempach in the community Oberkirch LU (height 504 meters) and flows east of Aarau at an altitude of 362 meters in the Aare. The most important tributary is the Ruedertal, which branches off at Schöftland in a southeasterly direction.

In medieval documents the river had different names: Suron ( 1036 ), Suranum flumen (1210 ), Sure ( 1241 ). Since the 20th century Suhre is usually written, rarely even in the canton of Lucerne Sure. Since the 13th century the Suhre flows as channeled Stadtbach by Sursee. The main tributaries are the Wyna and Uerke.

1760 and 1806-1814, the outflow from Lake Sempach has been lowered. Until the 19th century the river in Suhrental was strongly meandering; the valley floor was swampy, for the most part. Since then, several river regulation were carried out:

Since November 2009, at the Suhre in Schöftland the first water vortex power plant in Switzerland in operation. The plant will annually 100,000 to 130,000 kilowatt hours ( kWh) of electricity.
