Sukabumi

Geographical unit

Sukabumi is a city in the province of Jawa Barat (West Java) in the district of Sukabumi in Indonesia with 299 247 inhabitants ( 2010).

Location

It is situated 115 km south of Jakarta at a height of about 600 meters on the southern slopes of Gede volcano. After Bandung to the east is 80 km and the Ocean in the west about 65 km.

History

The so-called Sukabumi inscription from the year 804 is the earliest testimony of the ancient Javanese script and language. All inscriptions previously were written in Sanskrit. The town's name comes from Sanskrit and means Happy Earth; sukha means " luck, felicity " and bhumi means " earth." Several small villages in this area were at the beginning of the 18th century operators of coffee plantations for the Dutch East India Company. Andries de Wilde, a Dutch physician and coffee and tea farmers acquired the land 1815., The Dutch built then in the early 20th century, the infrastructure such as railway station, power station, mosque and church.
