Province

Sukhothai (literally: Dawn of bliss; Thai: สุโขทัย ) is the capital of the district of Amphoe Mueang Sukhothai and Sukhothai province. The Sukhothai Province is located in the northern region of Thailand.

History

Established in 1238 from an ancient Khmer settlement, Sukhothai was later for 120 years capital of the first independent kingdom of Sukhothai.

According to legend, Sukhothai was founded around 500 AD, and one of their leaders was King Chao Aluna Khmara, also known as Phra Ruang.

The town of Sukhothai in 1968 completely destroyed by fire, all the buildings in this area thus stem from recent times.

Geography

Sukhothai is located about 440 kilometers north of the capital Bangkok in the catchment area of the river Yom amidst a hilly area that serves the rice cultivation. The city consists of two relatively distinct districts: Old and New Sukhothai.

Traffic

Sukhothai has in the west of the city near the intersection of National Highway No. 101 ( Kamphaeng Phet - Nan ) with the National Road No. 12 ( Tak - Khon Kaen ) a modern bus station.

The nearest airport is the Sukhothai Airport ( IATA code: THS ), he is about 27 kilometers north of the city.

Attractions

The Ancient City of Sukhothai Historical Park (UNESCO World Heritage) is an important tourist attraction. The old city was surrounded by earthen ramparts and ditches of 1.8 km x 1.4 km stretch. Already in 1942 there were plans they restaurien as historical park. However, the first work on the inventory did not begin until the early 1950s, the first restoration work began in 1964. Ramkhamhaeng The Museum was founded on January 25, 1964, where important finds were issued. The final restoration was completed in 1988, as the Sukhothai Historical Park by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX. ) Was inaugurated. Inside and outside the old city walls today are nearly 200 temple ruins to see the oldest ruins date from the 13th century.
