Sula River

Catchment area of the Dnieper with the course of Sula ( Сула )

The Sula (Ukrainian Сула ) is a left tributary of the Dnieper River with a length of 363 km and a catchment area of 18,500 km ². It rises in the south-western spurs of the Central Russian ridge about 30 km west of the northern Ukrainian Oblasthauptstadt Sumy. From its source it flows in a southwesterly direction, with the right bank of deep cuts into the Poltava Plateau in the middle reaches. The Sula opens in Poltava Oblast in the dammed reservoir to Krementschuker Dnieper. Due to the impoundment she now has a large delta with numerous islands where rare birds nest. An important tributary is the Udaj to the smaller tributaries include Orschyzja, Sliporid, Romen and Tern.

Larger towns on the Sula are Romny, Lochwyzja, Tscherwonosawodske and Lubny.
