Sullivan County (Tennessee)

Sullivan County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Blountville.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme northeast of Tennessee, bounded on the north Virginia and has an area of 1113 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Scott County ( Virginia), Washington County ( Virginia), Bristol ( Independent City ) (Virginia), Johnson County, Carter County, Washington County and Hawkins County.

History

Sullivan County was formed on October 18, 1779 from parts of Washington County. It was named after John Sullivan, a major general of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War, leader of the Sullivan Expedition of 1779 ( a punitive expedition against the Iroquois ) and later governor of New Hampshire.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Sullivan County 153 048 people in 63 556 households and 44 806 families. The population density was 143 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 96.55 percent White, 1.89 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.21 percent from other races groups; 0.69 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 63 556 households out of which 28.4 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.1 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 29.5 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent of all households and 11.1 percent lived in persons aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average household size was 2.84 people.

21.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 to 24, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44, 26.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.9 percent were older than 65, the average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 93.3 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 33,529, and the median income for a family was $ 41,025. Males had a median income of $ 31,204, women $ 21,653. The per capita income was $ 19,202. 9.7 percent of families and 12.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
