Sully-sur-Loire

Sully- sur -Loire is a French town with 5455 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Loiret in the Centre region. It lies on both banks of the Loire, whose bed is particularly broad and flat. Why was here in the early Middle Ages a ford, since the 10th century as a bridge crossing over the river. The bridge has been destroyed several times in the following centuries and rebuilt. Sully- sur -Loire is known primarily for its castle. The place is often used as a starting point for tours to the castles of the Loire.

The Castle

The castle of Sully is located on the banks of the Loire - earlier it was almost the middle of the river. Therefore, the moat is particularly wide and extends behind the castle to a pond. The plant was built or rebuilt in the 14th to 17th century. The oldest part of the plant is the nearest the Loire high Donjon, which is surrounded by thick round towers at the corners. In the largest room in the castle, the hall of honor on the first floor of the keep, Voltaire had his tragedy " Artémise " list when he had banished from Paris, found refuge in Sully.

Particularly worth seeing is the roof of the keep, considered one of the technically most elaborate and beautiful, which are obtained from the Middle Ages, is considered.

With the conversion of the castle after 1602 of a defensive system to a representation Maximilien de Béthune castle under, duc de Sully, the growing Italian influence was accompanied by gradually replaced the Gothic sense of form.

The castle is since 1962 owned by the Loiret and is used as a museum.
