Sulo Bärlund

Sulo Richard Bärlund ( born April 15, 1910 in Kangasala, † April 13, 1986 ) was a Finnish athlete who was active mainly in the shot put discipline.

From professional plumber Bärlund was at various sports clubs in Tampere ( Tampere Kullervo, Tampere Veikkot, Tampere Pyrintö ) active. He won seven times the Finnish Championships in the shot put, and three times that of the Workers Sports Federation TUL. He managed to be the first Finn to exceed the 16- foot mark and put on 12 July 1936, 16.23 m to a Finnish record in the shot put, which should hold up in the 1950s.

At the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, he won with 16.12 m ( 15.68 to 16.03 - 14.98 to 15.52 - 16.12 to 15.42 ), the silver medal behind Hans Woellke.
