Sultamicillin is a prodrug antibiotic, wherein the β -lactam antibiotic ampicillin are coupled as bactericidal active ingredient and sulbactam as an inhibitor of β -lactamase chemically by an ester bond. This binding inhibits the absorption from the gut (oral bioavailability) compared with the combination of both substances as free molecules increases. After absorption, the bond is cleaved hydrolytically.

Sultamicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic. It exerts its effect on β -lactamase - formers (eg Staphylococcus aureus) and anaerobic bacteria. Areas of application are mainly urinary and respiratory infections by ampicillinempfindliche bacteria, but also gonorrhea.

The plasma half -life is approximately one hour. Ampicillin and sulbactam are excreted unchanged by the kidneys. As side effects of diarrhea have been described mainly, allergic reactions are possible.
