Sultanpur district

The district Sultanpur (Hindi: सुल्तानपुर जिला ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the eponymous town of Sultanpur.

Geography

The district Sultanpur is located in the eastern part of the Awadh region ( Oudh ) in Central Uttar Pradesh and is part of Faizabad Division. Neighboring districts are Faizabad in the north- west, Ambedkar Nagar in the northeast, Azamgarh in the east, in the southeast of Jaunpur, Pratapgarh in the southwest and Amethi in the West.

Before the spin-off of the district Amethi in 2010, the district Sultanpur had an area of 4,436 square kilometers. The area belongs to the flat Gangetic Plain and is crossed by the Gomti River, a tributary of the Ganges.

The district Sultanpur is divided into four Tehsils Sultanpur, Kadipur, Lambhua and Jaisinghpur. The three Tehsils Amethi, Gauriganj Musafir Khana and 2010 came to the district of Amethi.

History

The district Sultanpur was created by the British after they had as a result of the Indian Rebellion of 1857 the princely state of Oudh, to which the region had heard before, annexed. 1902 Oudh was, from which it was a part of the United Provinces after the Indian independence in 1947 the state of Uttar Pradesh. In 2010 the new district of Amethi (originally under the name of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar ) formed from parts of the districts of Sultanpur and Raebareli.

Population

According to the 2011 census, the district Sultanpur under the old territorial status has 3,797,117 inhabitants ( all subsequent figures refer to the former district area, including the district today to Amethi related areas). Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 18 percent. The population density is 856 inhabitants per square kilometer, slightly above the already high average of the state ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). Here, the district is very rural: only about five percent of the population live in cities. The urbanization rate is among the lowest of Uttar Pradesh and is well below the average of the state ( 22 percent). The literacy rate is 69 percent close to the average Uttar Pradesh (68 percent).

The population of the district according to the 2001 census Hindus represent 83 per cent majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 16 percent.
