Sumbawa Besar

Sumbawa Besar is a city on the north coast of the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia's Nusa Tenggara Barat province. With around 60 000 inhabitants of Sumbawa Besar is the second largest city on the island.

Economy

Sumbawa Besar, the administrative center of the administrative district ( kabupaten ) Sumbawa, is the center of a large agricultural sectors and for Indonesian conditions rather sparsely populated region. Tourism is generally as on Sumbawa only of secondary importance.

Transport

Sumbawa Besar is located on a well-developed road that crosses the island of Sumbawa from west to east. About two kilometers northwest of the city is the airport Bandar Udara Brangbiji, of the Indonesian airline Merpati Nusantara Airlines, the neighboring islands of Bali and Lombok had approached until it filed for bankruptcy in February 2014. The port Poto Tano, a pier where ferries to Lombok is located, 90 km west of Sumbawa Besar.

Architecture

The most prominent buildings in the city are Built in 1885 of wood and built on stilts former Sultan's palace Dalam Loka and in 1932, built in the Dutch style property Balai Kuning, which now houses the city council has its headquarters. Nearby is the market Seketeng, the most important of the city. In the city center, the Catholic Church Gereja Sang Penebus, one of only four churches on the island rises. Also known is the University Universitas Samawa founded in 1998.

Environment

Known for its stilt houses Poto village located 12 km north-east of Sumbawa Besar. The bay Pantai Kencana, 12 km north-west of the town, because of its pebbly beach, where a Hindu temple was built, a popular tourist destination. Before the town is the island of Moyo, whose main town Tanjung Pasir a ferry service. The well-known, 2851 m high volcano Tambora rises about 40 km northeast of Sumbawa Besar.
