Sumner County (Kansas)

Sumner County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wellington.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kansas, on the south by Oklahoma and has an area of 3069 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Sedgwick County, Butler County, Cowley County, Harper County and Kingman County.

History

Sumner County was formed in 1873. It was named after Charles Sumner, an abolitionist and United States Senator for Massachusetts. The native-born Susanna Madora Salter was in 1887 elected mayor of Argonia and was the first woman to hold that office in the USA.

According to the census of 2000, there were 25,946 people in Sumner County. Of these, 408 people were living in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 9888 households, and 7089 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 94.62 percent White, 0.71 percent African American, 1.05 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.05 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.29 percent from other races groups; 2.06 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.58 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9888 households out of which 34.5 percent of children under 18 who lived with them. 59.9 percent were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers and 28.3 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent of all households were single-person households and 12.4 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.10 persons.

28.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.5 percent 18-24 Years, 26.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 15.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 93.9 males.

The median income for a household was $ 39,415, and the median income for a family was $ 46,739. Males have a median income of $ 36,616, women $ 23,020. The per capita income was $ 18,305. 7.2 percent of families and 9.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
