Sumner County is a county located in the state of Kansas in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Wellington.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Kansas, on the south by Oklahoma and has an area of ​​3069 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface. It borders in Kansas clockwise to the following counties: Sedgwick County, Butler County, Cowley County, Harper County and Kingman County.

History

Sumner County was formed in 1873. It was named after Charles Sumner, an abolitionist and United States Senator for Massachusetts. The native-born Susanna Madora Salter was in 1887 elected mayor of Argonia and was the first woman to hold that office in the USA.
