Sumter County (Georgia)

The Sumter County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Americus.

Geography

The County is located in the central southwest Georgia, is in the west about 80 km from the border with Alabama and has an area of ​​1276 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Macon County, Dooly County, Crisp County, Lee County, Terrell County, Webster County, Marion County and Schley County.

History

Sumter County was formed on December 16, 1831 from parts of Lee County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter from North Carolina, an officer in the French and Indian War in the American Revolutionary War.
