Sumter County (Georgia)
The Sumter County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Americus.
Geography
The County is located in the central southwest Georgia, is in the west about 80 km from the border with Alabama and has an area of 1276 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Macon County, Dooly County, Crisp County, Lee County, Terrell County, Webster County, Marion County and Schley County.
History
Sumter County was formed on December 16, 1831 from parts of Lee County. It was named after General Thomas Sumter from North Carolina, an officer in the French and Indian War in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census of 2000, there were 33,200 people in Sumter County. Of these, 1,512 people lived in collective centers, the other inhabitants lived in 12,025 households and 8,501 families. The population density was 26 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 48.22 percent White, 49.02 percent Black or African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.26 percent from other races groups; 0.59 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.68 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,025 households out of which 34.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.5 percent were married couples living together, 22.0 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households and 8.9 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.
27.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 11.9 percent between 18 and 24, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.3 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 88.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.9 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,904, and the median income for a family $ 35,379. Males have a median income of $ 27,828, women $ 20,439. The per capita income was $ 15,083. 17.6 percent of families and 21.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
