Sumter County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sumter.

Geography

The County is located north-east of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of ​​1766 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County, Florence County, Clarendon County, Calhoun County, Richland County and Kershaw County.

History

Sumter County was formed in 1798. It was named after Thomas Sumter, a general of the United States in the U.S. Revolutionary War and a longtime member of the U.S. Congress.
