Sumter County (South Carolina)
Sumter County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sumter.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of 1766 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Lee County, Florence County, Clarendon County, Calhoun County, Richland County and Kershaw County.
History
Sumter County was formed in 1798. It was named after Thomas Sumter, a general of the United States in the U.S. Revolutionary War and a longtime member of the U.S. Congress.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Sumter County 104 646 people in 37 728 households and 27 616 families. The population density was 61 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.13 percent White, 26.68 percent Black or African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.90 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.80 percent from other races groups; 1.16 per cent were descended from two or more races. 1.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 37 728 households 36.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.2 percent were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers, 26.8 percent were non-families, 23.2 percent of all households and 8.5 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.17 persons.
28.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.5 percent between 18 to 24, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44, 20.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males to every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,278, and the median income for a family was $ 38,970. Males have a median income of $ 28,083, women $ 21,162. The per capita income was $ 15,657. 13.1 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
