Sun Prairie is located in south central Wisconsin, in the north-eastern suburban area of the capital, Madison. Located on the Mississippi intersection of the three states of Wisconsin, Iowa and Illinois is located 164 km south-west.

From northeast to southwest runs through Sun Prairie a railroad line of the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad, a regional (Class II ) Freight transportation company. The only passenger in the region is the traffic going from Chicago to the West Coast Empire Builder Amtrak, which stops in Madison.
