The Sunflower County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Indianola.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Mississippi and has an area of 1832 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

Sunflower County was formed on February 15, 1844 from parts of Bolivar County and Washington County. It was named after the running here Sunflower River. In the small town of Parchman is built with the 1901 Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm, the oldest and largest detention center of the state of Mississippi.
