Sunflower County, Mississippi

The Sunflower County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Indianola.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Mississippi and has an area of 1832 square kilometers, of which 35 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered by the following counties:

History

Sunflower County was formed on February 15, 1844 from parts of Bolivar County and Washington County. It was named after the running here Sunflower River. In the small town of Parchman is built with the 1901 Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm, the oldest and largest detention center of the state of Mississippi.

After the census of 2000, lived in Sunflower County 34,369 people in 9,637 households and 7,314 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 28.88 percent White, 69.86 percent Black or African American, 0.09 percent Native American, 0.40 percent Asian, and 0.48 percent from other races; 0.28 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.30 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.

Of the 9,637 households out of which 38.4 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.3 percent were married couples living together, 28.4 percent were single mothers and 24.1 percent were non-families. 21.2 percent of all households were single-person households and 9.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 3.01 and the average family size is 3.50 people.

27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 14.0 percent between 18 to 24, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44, 18.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old and 9.7 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 115.9 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 120.0 males.

The average income of a household was $ 24,970, for a family is $ 29,144. Males had a median income of $ 26,208, women $ 19,145. The per capita income was $ 11,365. Approximately 24.6 percent of families and 30.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
