Sung poetry

Sung poetry is one in Eastern Europe (mainly widespread in Poland and the Baltic States, but also in post-Soviet countries ) term for a musical style that describes more the lyric text as the musical character. In German-speaking countries, the term is hardly known. The texts have the greatest similarity to the genre of singer-songwriters or songs, but the music is not set to their associated musical styles.

Characteristic and representative of this art

In Germany and Others Czesław Niemen and Marek Grechuta as representative of this genre are known. While Grechuta mainly in the GDR appeared with his band Anawa in the 1970s as a songwriter and here more for the genres Songwriter, progressive rock and classical music is, Niemen is internationally known as a rock singer since the 1960s. However, he also achieved a synthesis of traditional church music and avant-garde rock music. Both artists set to music their own texts, but also classical poetry such as ballads, concept albums, or political protest songs. Additional representatives Ewa Demarczyk that occurred with chansons throughout Europe or Jacek Kaczmarski, who became known as a protest singer and " Bard of Solidarity".

Texts and forms of expression

Sung poetry is mainly a word or text -driven music, their poetry is based on a ballad or a poem. Stylistically, the music is not fixed. From classical to chanson, rock and pop to rap, metal or jazz styles all are feasible. In fact, the style of music used in the rule is carefully considered and coordinated with the texts used. Sometimes a symbiosis of different styles is selected or changed in concept albums, sometimes even within the same song, between the styles.

The artists are people from various professions, usually with little or no special musical training, as well as actors from the theater area or sometimes also from the cabaret. Most actors maintain a close collaboration with authors, songwriters, singers or actors, both in the background as well as on stage. Were typical during the time of communism joint performances, such as at festivals and other concerts together, often in conjunction with a motto. Appearances were and are to this day the student Song Festival in Krakow, the former festival of political song in the GDR, which still exists today and less political Sopot Festival and other festivals throughout Europe.
