Sungir

Sungir is an archaeological find space on the outskirts of Vladimir (Russia ), which was made famous by three particularly richly decorated tombs from the Upper Paleolithic.

Among the remains of eight Cro -Magnon people enter three tombs with unique for this time grave goods produced: the approximately 23,000 BP 14C - dated grave of an elderly man ( Sungir 1 ), which was discovered in 1955, and the double burial of two youths ( Sungir 2 and 3 ) with very elaborate jewelry, lances from mammoth ivory and remnants of clothing. The graves of young people in Oxford were dated in the 14C laboratory to about 24,000 BP, with a fairly high standard deviation is present, which can appear to be possible with the Men's grave, a simultaneous strike.

In the years 1957 to 1977 systematic excavations took place. Among the notable grave goods included, among other things, a by Otto Bader excavated, relatively massive femur with severed joints, possibly derived from a Neanderthal. The marrow cavity of this bone was filled with ocher powder.

The graves of Sungir is one of the northernmost fossil record of the Cro -Magnon people during the last ice age.
