Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Manohar Gavaskar (nickname: Sunny), (* July 10, 1949 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India ) is a former Indian cricketer. He was in 47 Test matches and 37 One- Day International cricket matches ( ODIs ) captain of the Indian team. Gavaskar is one of the best opening batsmen in the history of cricket.

Career

The only 1.65 meters wide Sunil Gavaskar took part in his first Test for India against the team of the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad in March 1971. In this test series against the West Indies, which included a total of five test matches, he left a lasting impression, because he succeeded in excellent overall 774 runs, or an average of 154.80 runs per wicket. He was the first Indian to ( at least 100 runs scored ) scored 4 Centuries in a test series. With his power he had a significant role in ensuring that the Indian team ever won a Test series against the West Indies in the Caribbean for the first time. Overall Gavaskar completed during his career 125 encounters in Test cricket for the Indian team, where he scored 10122 runs ( 51.12 runs per wicket ). He was the first cricketer ever, who scored 10,000 Test runs. He also scored 34 Test Centuries, which he had established a long record for most Testcenturies held. This record was broken in 2005 by his compatriot Sachin Tendulkar. Furthermore, Sunil Gavaskar completed a total of 108 ODIs for India, where he scored 3092 runs ( 35.13 runs per wicket ). With the Indian team he also participated in four Cricket World Cups (1975, 1979, 1983 and 1987). He and his team won the tournament in 1983.
