Sunken Meadow State Park

The Sunken Meadow State Park, also Sunken Meadow State Park ( Governor Alfred E. Smith) is a state park on the shore of Long Iceland Sound near Smithtown in Suffolk County, New York, USA. It is located on the northern side of the island Long Iceland and covers an area of about 4.9 square kilometers. Is maintaining the park from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The park's name ( Sunken Meadow ) stems from the deep wet meadows, separating the narrow sandy beach from behind higher land. The nickname Governor Alfred E. Smith has been added in honor of the former governor of the U.S. state of New York.

History

The first piece of the park land was acquired by the State of New York of the Lamb family in 1926. The expansion of highways, the interest of the people at the park and a visit to the beach area grew. In 1928, came from the town of Smithtown another large piece of land on the beach to the park added. Other minor enhancements have taken place in the following years. Today, up to 2.5 million people visit the park annually, of good weekends up to 24,000 visitors can stay in the park.

Things to Do

The park offers about 4.5 kilometers of beach on Long Iceland sound. The Nissequogue River flows into the park in the Long Iceland Sound, and here is brackish water areas and marshes. Separated by a causeway from the tidal waters, there are other marshes that are fed by the river and groundwater. In the park are so three different aquatic ecosystems ( marine, brackish and fresh water) with different flora and fauna. South of the wetlands are natural forests in slightly hilly, glacial stamped landscape that forms a cliff on Long Iceland sound. The highest elevation in the park is about 80 meters above the sea level. The park has about 10 kilometers of walking and bike paths and parking ( extra charge), several picnic areas, playgrounds, ball sports courts and restaurants. There is the possibility of horse riding, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing. The connected Governor Alfred E. Smith / Sunken Meadow State Park Golf Course Golf Course has three lanes each with nine holes, Driving Range ( for practicing long strokes) and a putting green ( for practicing Einlochens of the ball ). The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

The Long Iceland Greenbelt Trail connects the Sunken Meadow State Park on a nearly 50 -mile walk to the Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay near East Islip.

You can reach the park at the Sunken Meadow State Parkway, the two own trips to the park and has finally ends here. By public transport the park over about one kilometer from Long Iceland Railroad Station Kings Park and the bus can be achieved. In addition to the main entrance for cars give it to numerous other entrances for pedestrians and cyclists.

Fauna

The park has many species are native. For birding living in the park birds, the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation has compiled a list that simplifies the definition and set up various monitoring stations.
