Sunoco is a mineral oil and natural gas companies in the United States. Previously Sunoco was known under the name of Sun Company Inc..

The company's headquarters are located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

In Canada, Sunoco is controlled by the company Suncor Energy, an independent Canadian company.

Approximately 14,900 people are employed worldwide (as of 2005).

History

Sunoco began under the name " The Peoples Natural Gas Company " in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. 1886 decided the company founder Joseph Newton Pew and Edward O. Emerson, expand the natural gas business with a step in the newly discovered oil fields in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Four years later, the growing company was renamed Sun Oil Company of Ohio. The company grew quickly and was very successful in the production and sale of petroleum and petroleum-based processed products. 1901, the company expanded its interests at the Spindletop oil field in Texas.

With a growing number of oil fields and refineries in the back, the company opened in 1920 the first service station in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. 1925, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange.

After the end of World War 2, the company expanded internationally. The first Canadian refinery was built in 1953 in Sarnia, Ontario. In 1957 the company promoted on Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela oil until this site was nationalized in 1975 by the State of Venezuela.

Sunoco acquired in January 2001, the Pittsburgh-based Aristech Chemical Corporation with its five chemical plants and advanced in Pittsburgh, the Research Centre. Sunoco Chemicals has thus become one of the world's largest producers of phenol, polypropylene and other raw materials for the chemical industry.

Other Facts

The company Sunoco provides the official fuel of NASCAR, Grand -Am Sports Car Series and since 2011 also the official fuel supplier for the IndyCar Series.
