Sunrise at Campobello

Sunrise at Campobello is an American biopic about the life of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1960 with Ralph Bellamy and Greer Garson in lead roles.

Action

In the summer of 1921, the aspiring U.S. politicians Franklin D. Roosevelt spends with his wife Eleanor and their five children shared care-free months on his summer home on Campobello Iceland. When he along with Eleanor enjoying the sunset one evening, he momentarily loses control of his legs and nearly falls to the ground. After the forces fail him at bedtime for a second time in the legs, examined him a specialist and diagnosed polio. Roosevelt, however, can not be dissuaded from his ambitious plans and is thereby actively supported by his best friend and adviser Louis McHenry Howe. Background

Sunrise at Campobello is the film adaptation of Dore Scharys eponymous stage play in which Ralph Bellamy as Franklin D. Roosevelt had already appeared on Broadway and for which he had in 1958 received a Tony Award. Schary sold the film rights for $ 500,000 to Warner Brothers on the condition that he would be involved both as a co-producer as well as a screenwriter on the project. As a studio boss Jack L. Warner Marlon Brando for the lead role envisaged, Schary insisted on Bellamy and seated herself by the end. When it became known that Greer Garson was to play the role of Eleanor Roosevelt, they were estimated in Hollywood as miscast, since it was agreed on that Garson had no resemblance to the president's wife. With the help of makeup and false teeth Garson convincing in their roles, the critics finally and for her performance received an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe.

The film was shot on location in Hyde Park, in upstate New York and on Campobello Iceland in New Brunswick, Canada, where Roosevelt had two of several residences.
