History

The company's founders, Paul and Terry Klaassen, both had experience with long-term care as they grew up. Terry and her family learned the institutional character of nursing homes in the United States know, while Paul visited his grandparents, who lived in the Netherlands. After their marriage they both worked volunteer in nursing homes in the U.S. and got to know many seniors who were dissatisfied with the formal care in these homes.

The couple decided to take over the Dutch model for long-term care of the elderly as a business model. They sold their house and bought one just closed nursing home, which she renovated. In the first fiscal year, they still took care of itself to the residents. This new alternative in the elderly spread quickly and was called " Assisted Living".

To meet the growing demand, the Klaassens the mid-1980s opened two more Sunrise homes. In 1987, the first home was opened in the style of a Victorian villa. This was one of the first built expressly for this purpose nursing homes in the United States.
