Sunshine Coast (Queensland)

Sunshine Coast is the name of a region on the coast of the Australian state of Queensland. For Australian conditions Sunshine Coast is densely populated and has 290,645 inhabitants ( 2005). The largest city with 89 435 inhabitants ( 2005), Caloundra.

Geography

Geographical location

The Sunshine Coast stretches with a length of about 60 km around 27 degrees south latitude on the Australian east coast, about 100 kilometers north of Brisbane, the capital of Queensland. The region includes the Local Government Areas ( LGAs ) Noosa Shire in the north, Maroochy Shire in the center and the City of Caloundra in the south.

The Sunshine Coast is bordered to the east by the Pacific Ocean to the west on the Blackall Range in the north to the city of Gympie and south to the city of Caboolture. The region forms a narrow coastal strip along the southern Coral Sea, but is located south of the Great Barrier Reef. Towards land the Sunshine Coast is bordered by a low mountain range, which is a spur of the Great Dividing Range.

Climate

The subtropical climate is hot all year round, in winter ( June to August) be the average temperatures about seven to 22 degrees Celsius in the summer (December to February), 17 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Economy

Long sandy beaches, several nature parks, scenic mountains and convenient location make the area a center of tourism. From July 2003 to June 2004, there were 2.8 million tourists. 92 percent of the tourists with 84 percent of the nights was accounted for by Australians. Approximately one in five jobs in the region belongs to tourism.

Traffic

Direct flights to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide there from Sunshine Coast Airport, ten kilometers north of Maroochydore, with Australian airlines Jetstar Airways and Virgin Australia, as well as the airline Tiger Airways from Singapore.

Trains of the railway company Queensland Rail ride on the Nambour and Gympie North railway line up to Brisbane. Coach company Sunbus Sunshine Coast travel the route of Noosa Heads and Tewantin in the north to Caloundra and Landsborough Rail station in the south. Ferries run to Tewantin, Noosaville, Noosa Waters, Northside and Noosa Heads.

Education

In Sippy Downs there is a university, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC ). The university opened its doors in 1996 and is one of the most modern universities in Australia.

The Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE ( SCIT ) has campuses in Nambour, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Noosa and Caloundra. It is part of the Technical and Further Education ( TAFE ), a network of state institutions.
