Super Proton Synchrotron

The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS ) is a particle accelerator at CERN.

Originally planned as a 300 GeV machine, the PLC can accelerate protons up to 450 GeV. The PLC has a circumference of 6912 meters and is next to cavity resonators of 744 dipole magnets and 216 quadrupoles.

The PLC is used to accelerate protons and lead ions ( as a pre-accelerator of the Large Hadron Collider ( LHC) ) antiprotons, electrons, positrons and heavy ions. In this case, these particles are usually in turn pre-accelerated in the Proton Synchrotron

Currently it provides, among other things, the COMPASS experiment ( NA58 ), the NA61 experiment ( SHINE ) and the NA62 experiment. Historically, took place, for example, the experiments NA11 and NA48 at this accelerator.
