Superbase database

Super Base is a desktop database system, which was originally developed for the Commodore PET. Over the following more than 20 years of successful porting to various other operating systems. Super Base contains its own programming language to automate database-related tasks; with later versions were added WYSIWYG forms, report designer and more complex programming options.

History

The program was originally created in 1983 by the British company Precision Software for the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. In 1989 it was the first database management system for Windows computers. It was often used only as an end- user database, but there were also a large number of applications, complex databases in industry, government and academia. Some of these applications are still in use today, however, mostly in small businesses.

The first versions were carried out only in text mode, but with the release of the Amiga version was a completely new concept for accessing databases developed. Super Base was the first product to the VCR control panel used to navigate through the records. In addition, there were a number of different media formats that supported it directly, including images, sounds and videos. Super base was often referred to as THE multimedia database of the early years, when such features were unusual. Amiga versions also contained an internal language and the ability to front-end " masks " for queries and reports to create, years before there was Microsoft Access.

This version was a great success and led to a version that has been developed for a number of platforms. Finally, a Microsoft Windows version was released, and a few years later the company was sold by its founder to the Software Publishing Corporation. SPC sold the non-Windows versions of the product - and after publishing version 2, in late alpha stage version 3, SPC sells the product of a company called Computer Concepts Corporation.

This relatively unknown company founded a subsidiary called Super Base, Inc. and after the end of the late Alpha stage of version 3 they released it as a super base 95 Finally, she seemed to have lost interest in the product. A small group of former customers founded the " Super Base Devolopers plc " and bought the rights to the database to support under the name " Super Base Classic" to expand.

A new version was called " Super Base Next Generation" ( SBNG ). It contains a new, object-oriented programming language called SIMPOL. Development began in 1999-2000, 2005, a beta version was released, coupled with the promise that the final release would come out soon.

In 2006 SIMPOL was sold to the Real Basics Ltd, which was later renamed Simpol Ltd..

In April 2009, the company SIMPOL Professional, which is the next generation product as a cross- platform language and database tool published.

In February 2009 it was announced that the Super Base Developers plc would have filed for bankruptcy.

In March 2010, the Papatuo Holdings Ltd acquired. the rights to the Super Base family of the Super Base Developers plc.

Use

Super base has often been used for simple end- user tasks, its true strength lies in the possibility to create relatively inexperienced programmers complex applications. The range of applications extends from accounting software, ERP / MRP packages, business information systems, control programs for the production and similar complex products to simple databases, such as Member administrations or contact management systems.

Features

The database contains a fast, versatile ISAM database engine and its own Powers BASIC dialect as well as sophisticated form and report engines. It is also designed to serve as a front end for one or more SQL data sources. The biggest drawback is that it was written for a 16- bit Windows API and it was not profitable to port them to a 32- bit version. The rewritten version is to ensure that this disadvantage no longer exists and make it even more powerful and easier to use the package.

For an inexperienced programmer of the fact that the database is based on SQL is a distinct advantage because it is thus less complex. Also, it is easier for the user to comprehend the concepts of management and procedures within the database.

There are numerous powerful features in Super Base, these are a few of them:

  • Virtual tables - they exist only in memory
  • Virtual columns - they are calculated during the access
  • Peer -to-peer client / server ( PPCS ) - this technology allows any version of super base to act as a database server, client, or both. On the database tables are accessed via UDP.
  • Low system requirements - Super Base runs on any Windows version (except the 64-bit versions) and requires only 6 MB of memory
