Superbit

Under the title Superbit movies from Columbia TriStar Home Video ( Related to Sony ) have been released as a premium versions on DVD-Video.

Superbit DVDs contain less of the so-called extras ( among other documentaries and interviews ) which one finds on normal DVDs. Nevertheless, it is a normal encoded in MPEG -2 DVD and can be played in all DVD players.

The benefit of this particular DVD is the higher bit rate of the films, which is made possible due to the larger free space and almost entirely benefit the main movie. According to Sony, the bit rate should be nearly twice as high as in the normal versions of the film. This allows for a better picture quality - especially interesting for Home Cinema - and also allows the choice of audio tracks in Dolby Digital ( 5.1) and DTS.

Sony's Superbit offer was limited to a few selected bestsellers, which have been previously published in the regular DVD version to be even the most demanding customers. Superbit DVDs were more expensive than the standard versions, despite the reduced scope.

One must Superbit DVDs do not confuse with the successor of DVD formats (HD- DVD and Blu -ray Disc ) in which a higher picture and sound quality is aimed at.

Related DVD formats from other manufacturers are so far not known.
