Superior gluteal artery

The superior gluteal artery ( " upper buttocks artery " ) - referred to in the animal anatomy as gluteal artery cranialis - is gluteal artery of the lower limb in the regions. It arises from the internal iliac artery and is usually the strongest branch.

The superior gluteal artery runs through the greater sciatic foramen to the glutes. It divides into two branches. The superficial branch ( ramus superficialis ) supplies the gluteus maximus and forms anastomoses with the inferior gluteal artery. The deep branch ( ramus profundus ) supplies the gluteus medius and gluteus minimus and anastomoses with the lateral circumflex femoral artery.
