Superliner (railcar)

Superliner is a double decker coaches of the U.S. rail company Amtrak. Amtrak sets these cars on all long-distance trains of the Mississippi River and the City of New Orleans (Chicago- New Orleans), the Capitol Limited and the Auto Train a Western.

The cars are bigger and heavier than the other used Amtrak car. They are 85 feet ( 25 908 mm) long, 10 feet, 2 inches ( 3099 mm) wide and 16 feet, 2 inches ( 4928 mm) high. On average, these cars weigh 157 000 lbs (71 tons).

The transition between different cars are on the upper floor. Superliner coaches have about 70 seats, their arrangement is oriented to the first class in airplanes. The majority of the seating is located on the upper floor, below are just a few places for passengers with limited mobility. The largest part of the lower floor serves the baggage accommodation. The sleeper can usually accommodate 44 passengers, the sleeping compartments in turn are mostly on the top, and used the lower floor of the luggage storage and most sanitary facilities.

Lounge cars can be used by coach and sleeping car passengers. These are provided at the top with armchairs, and large panoramic windows from which passengers can enjoy the scenery. In the lower part are tables and a snack bar. The lounge cars are usually hung next to the Superliner dining car, in which the kitchen downstairs, and the dining area at the top.

Amtrak ordered last 140 Superliner cars from Bombardier, who built the cars at their factory in Barre, Vermont.
