The type 224 was the first aircraft, which bore the name " Spitfire ", although it hardly resembled the famous Spitfire. With articulated wings and a non-retractable landing gear with the first draft covering it had more in common visually with the Junkers Ju 87 " Stuka ". The aircraft was powered by a Rolls- Royce Goshawk with about 600 hp and was armed with four machine guns.

The development was carried out as an application to the specification F7/30 of 1930. The construction contract for F7/30 went to the Gloster Aircraft Company with the model gladiator, the last biplane fighters of the Royal Air Force.
