Superscope

Superscope was a 1954 -established film production format to produce 35mm widescreen movies.

Background

The brothers Irving and Joseph Tushinsky wanted to achieve with Superscope that a spherical recorded film could be shown in any Cinemascope format. They settled on the 2.0:1 format since had still prevailed at the time, no single format. The 35 - mm film negative was completely exposed but only the horizontal midsection of the negative was required for the desired 2.0:1 widescreen format, the camera man had to be taken into account during the filming, as later fell away a portion of the top and bottom edges. With the help of so-called Tushinsky lens the image detail needed was forged together in a 2:1 ratio and copied to the 35 - mm film positive in the laboratory. With an anamorphic lens, the image was equalized in the cinema hall and brought to the screen. The first shot in this format film was the 1954 Western Vera Cruz.

An advantage of the system was that you could turn with a spherical lens with a simple film equipment, as the anamorphic 2,00:1 format only developed in the laboratory. This one had no great additional expense equal to two different versions. In addition, the license fees for the expensive CinemaScope process of the film studio 20th Century Fox accounted for. RKO and smaller film studios and independent producers took over the system.

However, the 2,00:1 format could not be translated, because when copying deteriorated the image quality and the compressed square format had a part in the film positive unused, which led to difficulties when playing on an incorrectly adjusted cinema projector. As early as 1956 was changed with Superscope 235 on the 2.35:1 format to facilitate Demonstrate. With the advancement of technology also copy the image quality could be improved. After the end of the RKO Warner Bros. introduced the system continued under the name Warner Scope for a short time. Until 1981 it was changed back to Format attention than fell back with Super 35 Super Scope 235.
