Supersport World Championship

The Supersport World Championship is a racing class for near-series motorcycles. It is also known under the abbreviation WSS and is officially discharged since 1999 under the auspices of the FIM World Championship. The races take place within the framework of the Superbike World Championship and are due to the high power density of motorcycles often very scarce.

As a super sports car within the meaning of World Cup regulations are referred to production-based racing machines. The maximum displacement is 600 cc for four cylinder, 675 cc for three-cylinder and 750 cc for twin-cylinder machines.

The first winner of the class on 28 March 1999 in the South African Kyalami was the Briton Iain MacPherson on Kawasaki. Record world champion Kenan Sofuoglu won three titles.

On July 21, 2013, came during the World Cup run on the Moscow Raceway in Russia to a major accident with the Italian Andrea Antonelli, the case drew upon critical injuries. The race was stopped and the driver was immediately taken to the clinic where medical staff tried to resuscitate him. Despite all efforts Antonelli died shortly afterwards from his injuries.
