Supreme National Security Council

The National Security Council (Persian شورای عالی امنیت ملی Schoraye Amniate Keschwar ) is an organ of the Iranian government, the decisions in the national interest can take on the Iranian Parliament.

History

Origin

Originally, the Security Council under Article 110 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran was designated in 1979 as the Supreme Council of National Defense. It was made up of seven members:

  • The President
  • The Prime Minister
  • The Minister of Defence
  • The Chief of General Staff
  • The commander in chief of the corps of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard
  • Two consultants of the revolutionary leader

Reform

After the constitutional reform of 1989, from the Defense, a National Security Council, which was increased personnel and organization. Besides the Chief Justice, the Chairman of the Guardian Council, Foreign Minister, Minister of State and the head of the secret among others, the finance minister was included in the Security Council. The chairman or secretary of the Security Council, currently Ali Schamchani, the President, all other members shall be appointed by virtue of his office of the Supreme Leader.

Power

The Security Council shall normally meet in safety-critical situations and debates. Even in Iran's nuclear policy is the Security Council decisions, which, however, always require the approval of the Supreme Leader.
