Sur Lípez (also: " Sud Lípez " ) is a province in the southwest part of the department of Potosí in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The Lípez Sur province is one of sixteen provinces in the Potosí Department. It lies between 21 ° 16 'and 22 ° 53' south latitude and between 66 ° 13 ' and 68 ° 00 ' west longitude. It borders to the north and northwest of the province of Nor Lípez, on the west by the province Enrique Baldivieso, in the southwest and south by the Republic of Chile, to the southeast and east by the Republic of Argentina, and on the northeast by the province Sur chichas. The province extends from the northeast to the southwest and has a total length of 230 kilometers and an average width of 100 miles on.

Geography

The province has in the southwestern part, in the district Quetena Grande, some lakes and salt lakes, the largest of them with six kilometers across the Laguna Colorada at an altitude of 4278 m.

Most important idioms of the province, each with 88 per cent are equally Quechua and Spanish. The provincial capital is San Pablo de Lípez.

99.4 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 90 percent have no sanitary facilities. 69 percent of the population work in agriculture, 4 percent in mining, 4 percent in industry, 23 percent in services. 86 percent of the population are Catholic, 9 percent Protestant.

  • The municipality of San Antonio de Esmoruco - 2,284 inhabitants
