Surba

Surba is a commune with 351 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the canton of Tarascon- sur -Ariege in the arrondissement of Foix. It lies at an altitude of about 550 meters above sea level in the department of Ariège in the Midi-Pyrénées region. The municipality is part of the Regional Natural Park Pyrenees Ariégeoises.

Geography

Surba lies in the valley of the Courbiere ( Vallée de la Courbiere ). In the east, the municipality extends as far as the river Ariège. The nearest towns are about a kilometer southwest Banat and Quié about two kilometers southeast of Surba. The river flows into Courbiere Westostrichtung through the southern part Surbas. North of Surba, directly at the border, dominates the rock wall of Le SEDOUR in height and reaches 1045 meters above sea level; the mountain shields the location practically on the north. Tarascon- sur- Ariège, the capital of the canton of the same name, is located about three kilometers southeast of Surba.

The village has 349 inhabitants (2006 ), whose Demonym is Surbatois. The population is stagnating. The following development is held:

History

The earliest record dates from the year 961 as Sdrebane. 1375 Surba is recorded as Soyrebano, 1390 as Soyriba 1445 as Sorba, 1450 as Sobira. From the French Revolution Surbo established. Whether the name of the river Courbiere is related to the name Surba not yet been clarified.

Another attraction of the village is the 11th- century Romanesque church of St. Nikolaos. This is mentioned in writing in 1375 as sancti Nicholay de Soyrebano.
