Å urjan

Surjan ( Serbian Cyrillic -: Шурјан, Hungarian: Surján, German: Schurian ) is a village in the municipality Sečanj in Vojvodina in Serbia. In Surjan live about 250 inhabitants, with approximately equal parts Serbs and Magyars. The village lies on the Serbian border with Romania.

History

The name itself dates back to Jozsef Surian ( economist at a Hungarian Count from Temesvár ), who allegedly founded the village. However, there are in Timisoara documents which demonstrate that the village has existed since the Middle Ages. 1940 the current Serbian Orthodox Ascension Church was built in the village.

By 1945, there were also so-called Banat German. From 1868 to about 1948, the population was 700 to 800 people constant. In the village there was always a primary school, a Serbian Orthodox church and a Catholic prayer house.
