Surjoux

Surjoux is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Surjoux is located at 380 m above sea level. M., about ten kilometers south of the town of Bellegarde -sur -Valserine (air line). The farming village in the Rhone valley extends about 100 m above the Talniederung in a short tributary, at the eastern foot of the Cret du Nu, a ridge of the French Jura.

The area of ​​4.31 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Rhone Valley. The eastern boundary runs along the Rhône, the cut here deep in a narrow valley in the surrounding plateau from north to south flows. From the river, the municipality's area extends westward on a steep slope, which is partially covered by rock bands, except for the adjacent plateau at Jurafuß. This is broken down by the valleys of short tributaries of the Rhône. Above the village is 500 meters above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Surjoux.

To Surjoux the hamlet Bognes include (400 m above sea level. M. ) on the plateau and some homesteads. Neighboring communities of Surjoux are Injoux - Génissiat in the north, Franclens and Challonges in the east, the south and Chanay Lhopital in the West.

History

Is first mentioned in the 13th century Surjoux under the name Chargiou. The village was the center of a small rule in the 14th century.

Attractions

The village church of Surjoux was originally built in Gothic style, but has since changed several times. Ruins of the old manor house of Bognes are obtained. A salt storage dates back to the 18th century.

Population

With 77 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Surjoux is one of the smallest municipalities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, the population stagnated mid-1970s. Since then, small fluctuations were only recorded.

Economy and infrastructure

Surjoux was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Even today, the inhabitants live mainly from the activity in the first sector. Some employed persons are also commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area and mainly in Bellegarde -sur -Valserine their work.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares. Road links exist with Injoux - Génissiat, Chanay and Challonges. The nearest links to the A40 motorway is located at a distance of around 16 kilometers.
