Surname Law

With the family name Law of June 21, 1934 surnames were introduced in Turkey. Which entered into force in January 1935 law requires all Turks, so every Turkish citizen, except his first name to lead a family name (Art. 1).

The adoption of a surname had to take place until July 2, 1936. If this was not the case, the name of Vali, or Kaymakam of these authorized persons has been assigned. It were not about Aşiretnamen as well as foreign, offensive or ridiculous names to choose from. Furthermore allowed by Law No 2590 no styling and titles such as " Efendi ", " Bey " or " Pasha " are performed.

The nation's founder, Mustafa Kemal gave the Grand National Assembly the name "Atatürk " ("Father of the Turks" ), which is protected by the Law No 2622.
