Surry County (North Carolina)
Surry County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Dobson, which was named after Judge William Dobson or. According to William P. Dobson, a member of the General Assembly
Geography
The County is located in northwestern North Carolina, bounded on the north Virginia and has an area of 1393 square kilometers, of which 3 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Stokes County, Forsyth County, Yadkin County, Wilkes County and Alleghany County.
Surry County is divided into 15 townships: Bryan Dobson, Eldora, Elkin, Franklin, Long Hill, Marsh, Mount Airy, Pilot, Rockford, Shoals, Siloam, South Westfield, Stewarts Creek and Westfield.
History
Surry County was formed in 1770 from parts of Rowan County. It was named after the eponymous County in England, the birthplace of William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Surry County 71 219 people in 28 408 households, and 20,482 families. The population density was 51 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 90.40 percent White, 4.16 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.57 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 3.45 percent from other races groups; 1.15 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.49 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 28 408 households out of which 30.8 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.4 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers and 27.9 percent were non-families. 25.0 percent of all households and 11.7 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.92.
23.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.9 percent 18 to 24 years 29.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.4 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 38 years. In all females there were 95.7 males. In all women aged 18 and over, 92.2 males.
The median income for a household was $ 33,046, and the median income for a family was $ 38,902. Males had a median income of $ 27,854 versus $ 20,556 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,722. 12.4 percent of the population and 9.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 15.0 percent of them are children and adolescents under age 18 and 17.4 percent are 65 years or older.
