Active reactors ( gross ):

The nuclear power plant Surry is located in Gravel Neck in Surry County, after which it was named, in the southeast of the U.S. state of Virginia on the south bank of the James River across from historic Jamestown and Williamsburg, 45 miles northwest of Norfolk and 17 miles northwest of Newport News. It is a channel used to remove water from the James River. The site of the power plant is 840 acres in size. The nuclear power plant is similar in appearance and design of its sister plant North Anna. The four blocks of Surry and North Anna together produce about one-third of the required electricity in Virginia.

History

The construction of the two reactors began on 25 June 1968. The first block was first synchronized on 4 July 1972 with the power grid, the first grid synchronization of the second block on 10 March 1973. 1 block took commercial operation on 22 December 1972, Block 2 followed on 1 May 1973.

The architect for both reactors was Stone & Webster. On 30 March 2003, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved a license extension and extended the license for a period of 20 years. After the original license would block 1 in 2012 and Unit 2 must be switched off in 2013. In 2007, the capacity factor was 88.5 % for block 1 and 101.2 % for block 2

Reactors

For the plant 4 blocks were planned, of which only two reactors were completed.

Units 1 and 2

In the two completed and are in operation blocks are pressurized water reactors of Westinghouse, each with three circuits. The reactors have a gross capacity of 848 MW at a net capacity of 799 MW. With electricity from the nuclear power plant, Surry 400,000 average households can be supplied.

Block 3 and 4

The blocks Surry Surry 3 and 4 were also planned as pressurized water reactors, compared to blocks 1 and 2, but with a higher projected gross electrical output of 919 MW ( net capacity 859 MW, thermal power 2631 MW). The construction of both units began on 1 January 1974 and was discontinued on 1 March 1977.

Data of the reactor units

The Surry nuclear power plant has two units in operation, another two blocks were discarded:
